Theses of Reform of the Constitution Party–#8

Theses of Reform of the Constitution Party–#8

8.  End the national CP’s antagonistic and hateful religiosity.

a.  The abuse by the national CP in endless pronouncements declaring that it “is” Christian amount to little more than misuse of Christian faith as a weapon to justify bigoted rage.  Religiosity is not religion.  It has never been…it is semblance and no more.

b.  The national CP must decide—it is a religious denomination?  Or, is it a public political party? Those are not the same thing.  Further, anything which has the effect of hiding or mimicking autocracy under some feigned cloak of religiosity is inherently evil.  It is manipulative.  It misleads.  It distorts…it lies and ultimately perverts.  Liberty cannot be found down that road, travel it however far one will.

c.  Ceaseless and endless proclamations of militant absolutist views of Christianity (which is to say—zealotry) by the national CP, are expressly condemned by the very Scriptures this national party allegedly claims it heeds. Such proclamations are empty of good spirit; they have become malevolent; not aimed in love…but fired in hate, to hurt, to force, to revenge.  True faith, Christian faith, cannot be found down that road either.

d.  In any case, Scriptures condemn these kinds of public pageants of religiosity, which the national CP seems to lust mightily after.  Matthew 23:5-7 spells it out.  Citing Jesus who said: “All their deeds are done for men to see.  They broaden their phylacteries and lengthen their tassels.  They love places of honor at banquets, the chief seats in the synagogues, the greetings in the marketplaces, and the title of “Rabbi” by which they are addressed.”  Those who do their religiosity deeds for men to see…as the national CP does…have it way wrong. And, they have the whole of their reward in the doing of it.

e.  Under its zealot militancy, the national CP has mutated into a Pharisaic organization.  Lifeless ritual and dead words have become its easy substitute for the difficulties of Christian faith, for the Living Gospel.  National disregards justice within itself, will have nothing to do with it.  The presumption apparently is that “We are righteous.”  And doing thus, it condemns itself to hypocrisy just as much as the Pharisees did. “Woe to you Pharisees! You pay tithes of mint and rue and every herb, but you disregard justice and the love of God. You should have practiced the latter without neglecting the former.” Luke 42:42.

f.  Scriptures actually counsel the exact opposite of what the national CP seems to promote. “When you pray, do not be like the hypocrites. For they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. Truly I tell you, they already have their reward.” Matthew 6:5.  You are told to pray in seclusion.

g. But despite its spiritual instructions, national CP just cannot seem to go to a closet to pray. No…it insists on making all of it an enormous extravaganza, hostile, angry, as if by making louder and longer pronouncements of religiosity, by threats and belligerence, that that in itself somehow means that those making such claims are themselves righteous. They are…self righteous.

h.  Rather than study Scriptures with enlightenment and an open heart, national CP seems to raise them up as if the Scriptures were an idol…they do the very same thing with the Constitution of the United States. Used this way, as an idol, both become a bludgeon, a weapon, to beat and maim those who do not fit their Pharisaic narrow definitions.  The interest is not to uplift; it is to hurt, to bring down.  Jesus himself was a victim of this exact same kind of abusive narrowly defined religiosity.

i.  Many within the national CP decry:  “It’s war!”  And this supposedly justifies their abuse and misuse of Christianity.  They have so little understanding.  On several occasions, in Gethsemane and before Pontius Pilot, Jesus Himself declared that this “war” was not to be brought about by the strength of the arms of men.   To paraphrase, “Put away your sword, Peter.  I can call out Legions of Angels if that were the way.”  And, before Pilot, “My kingdom is not of this world.  It will not be brought about by men.”  Yet, too many within this party deny Scriptures (though they quote them without life ceaselessly) so convinced are they that their purpose is to maim and hurt.  They are mistaken.  And the national party itself is mistaken, because it enables and indeed condones that type of reckless hatefulness.  Salvation is not a “war”.  It is a gift freely given.

j.  A place for Christian faith exists in our national dialog, yes–indeed a thousand times yes.  There is a place for chaplains, and for benedictions and offerings of grace within a parliamentary body. But national CP has lost its place, and its way.  It has substituted a faux religiosity tainted by militancy for the tough work of building sensible, clear and coherent well-made public policies that are specific and workable…and compassionate.  The louder and longer national CP lip syncs its religiosity, the more and more self evident it becomes—it has become a by-rote Christian heap of words that die as dry as talc in its mouth.  It is phony.

k.  In any case, Christianity is not exclusive, it is not hateful nor is it vengeful.  It includes. This party must stop trying to use the Christian faith as a weapon against fellow mankind, to exclude. It must go into prayer in solitary places out of the processions it seems to love so well.  It must, in other words, become real.  Bottom line, this is a political party, not a cult.

“You blind guides! You strain out a gnat but swallow a camel.”  Mathew 23:24
