Penance more will do

November 8th, 2017

To describe (allegorically) why the national CP is stuck in the doldrums, “as idle as a painted ship, upon a painted ocean,” we turn to Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s (1798) “Rime of the Ancient Mariner”.

Senselessly and cruelly, the Mariner “had done a hellish thing.”  “With his cruel bow, he laid full low, the harmless Albatross.”  At first, the crew cheered the act…until they didn’t.

Penance surely followed.  “And penance more will do.”
